Verisign ends SiteFinder service
Posted by: dadmin on: 10/05/2003 10:50 PM [ Print | 3 comment(s) ]
Facing lawsuits in addition to immense hatred and scrutiny for 'wrecking' the DNS service, Verisign decided Friday to end its SiteFinder service after the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) sent a formal letter to Verisign requesting it comply with shutting the service down by Saturday at 6PM Pacific time.
Sitefinder, which was thrust upon the world September 15th, was a method by which Verisign pointed misspelled or non-registered wildcard addresses to a search page owned by Verisign. Three of Verisign's competitors had filed lawsuits citing 'unfair business practice' since the wildcard extended Verisign's control over 100% of the remainder of unregistered .com and .net top-level domains. Several other organizations publicly criticized Verisign's move, explaining the change rendered useless any spam filter or email server that depended on a returned error to work properly.
Following is an excerpt from the letter written by ICANN CEO Paul Twomey:
