VIA Ready for the Server Market?

Posted by: Hooz on: 12/04/2001 12:50 AM [ Print | 10 comment(s) ]

Is VIA ready for the server market? Apparently Dell thinks so. They have just introduced a NAS server that uses the Apollo Pro 133T chipset from VIA and some large 7200rpm IDE drives. Hmmm...

That is so ridiciously expensive for what it is. I could build a 640GB version of that for about the price of the 160GB.

Why is it NASes are so expensive? They're just a bunch of IDE drives with a MB/CPU and Network interface.

Oh, and there shouldn't be anything wrong with using a VIA chip for that - it's a controlled situation with no add-in cards, and only one CPU. Kinda like using an Athlon for a Web Server (which several big web hosts have started doing).

I opened this at my friends workplace:
I think it was an earlier version to the Powervault 715, I will get the exact model # for you tommorow.

4 quantum drives, 2 promise chips and an celeron on a small-ass custom mobo with an LX chipset. Thats it. Simple to build, and sold to you at a big fricking price = $profit :)

One needs to remember that when buying servers,
you are not just paying for the hardware, you are
also paying for the warranty and support that goes
with it.

Sure, you can build it for cheap, but how are you
going to staff the phones 24x7? How are you going
to keep spares in stock to send out overnight
when a failure occurs? Are you going to reach into
your pocket to pay for this, or mine?

Dell will have to sell a hell of a lot of those
things before they make a dime.

If it's worth doing, It's worth OVERdoing

The problem I've been having is finding a 1U rack
casing that can have 4 hard drives. Apparently, Dell
has no problem with finding it and this 715 model has
it all at the front too! Anyone know where I can find
a 4 hard drive bay 1U case?

The unit I saw was the 705 NAS, it was a custom 1U case & PSU and custom Intel LX mobo

What might tip the price up a bit is they also have an OS in those things. Some use a stripped down NT/2K kernel.

They are very popular for the 'mom and pop' shops that don't have a large budget for 'IT' staffing. Also, they are popular with government agencies who are top heavy with OLD FARTS that were kicked up the ladder and are now at the top of the food chain waiting for Medicare. Those people love stuff that doesn't require any knowledge to rollout and 'service' - just call the manufacturer and remember to buy the 'extended' service plan. :o

This is simply a CYA ploy IMHO. It's a lot easier to blame a piece of hardware or vendor than take responsibility for a problem. What they forget is they made the decision to buy from said vendor and their 'customers' don't really care who the vendor is, they just want it to work. If some of these idiots would spend some time and grey matter to think about their users and the technology, ....aaarrrrrggggghhh!!!!....

Vtan, the closest thing I could find was either a 3 drive 1u or a 6 drive 2u chassis.

vtan, here ya go: http://www.rackmountpro.com/productpage.cfm?prodid=718 - It's a pretty good price too - especially with the 250W PFC PSU.

I know there's 4 drive hotswappable available as well (APPro uses them) but I haven't found a source for those yet.
