Webserver: Changes Virtually Complete...

If you see this, you must be hitting our wonderful new webserver. As you may or may not know, due to tremendous growth over the past several months we were beginning to outgrow our previous webserver. It was a mere Cobalt RAQ4 (K63-450 / 384MB), and you crazy SMPers were taxing it at times (we served up 2.2 million pages in March).
Well, luckily as a result of your donations we now have some horsepower to spare. This machine, still with Rackshack.net, is a 1GHz Duron with 512MB of memory. This should ensure that the website loads fast and furious at all times, even during peak traffic hours.
The server seems to be running well, and I haven't noticed many configuration blips as of yet (I'm sure they'll pop up). I'd like to express my thanks to the genius MalHavoc who is always willing to lend a hand when needed. Dude, you rock. (if someone needs a unix admin, there isn't a finer one available on the planet)
Lastly, I'd like to thank you guys. Hooz and myself -hate- asking for donations to help pay the bills, but each and every time you end up surprising us both with your generosity. You all are what make this site; this community great.
[Ed - Well... 50% you and 50% me. Ok... 25% you and 75% me. Yeah.]

Well, the new server brought a bunch of upgrades to the table. Not only did we get more than twice the processor speed and more memory, but we also moved from a 5400rpm IDE drive to a 7200rpm IDE drive. That in itself will make the database (and the rest of the site) faster. It's still not an ideal hosting situation for us, but for the time being, it'll do just fine. Thats pretty good. I would suspect the cpu would have been better off being a tbird or xp though. The added cache would be used much more in a websever/forum. The machine is a 1ghz Duron with 512mb memory and a 40gb 7200rpm HDD. We have no real control over the box and its contents though, as we lease the server from our hosting provider. Question... Why not a dually server for the dually site? Ironic no? This statement is false. |

That has been talked about to death. They are going with rackshack. Rackshack doesn't offer a dual server. At this point, it's cheaper to deal with rackshack to get the package deal on server/bandwidth than to build a dualie and colocate it some place and pay for colocation fees + bandwidth. Purely a cost issue. MalHavoc Systems Administrator for http://www.BeyondUnreal.com and http://www.ReefCentral.com http://malhavoc.homeunix.com/ |

Rackshack is offering dual servers but they are sold out at this moment. http://www.rackshack.net/specsintel.asp |
