Weekend Topic: 'I Quit!' 15 Reasons You Probably Left Your Last IT Job

Posted by: ReMeDy on: 06/30/2007 01:34 AM [ Print | 5 comment(s) ]

I've stumbled across a link from eWeek about 15 reasons You probably left your last IT Job. I know many of us who frequent the site tend to work in the IT industry and have been through stress.

Check out the eWeek blurb, and then post below which one of the reasons best describes you. I chose 14. Although, 4 would be my next option.

i didn't see one matching my situation:

ex-employee of the recently shut down competitor walking in and saying "Hi, as you know (company X) just shutdown and i was in charge of their website updates for 6 years. I'll do yours for half of whatever your guy gets paid."

i just couldn't compete with that.

Number 14 in every way. Skill sets, workloads, and performance should all be compensated. Period. But they rarely are. I'm so glad people are sold for so cheap.

Unique.

#2. I wasn't in IT but Development/Support. Company has no ambitions of moving beyond SQL Server 2000 / VB 6 / ASP (even though we have no support for VB anymore), nor actively expanding beyond 150 customers. I left a year ago; they're still on the same platform with no plans of developing a next generation product.

Kind of a 14 which lead to 15 and finally an 8.

Budget cuts lead to down sizing. I was the newest employee so at first I was scared but I was also the youngest and least paid. So they axed a few people above me and started to hand me their job tasks. At first I was happy just to have kept my job, but then as others left and they continued to expand it just became too much. I couldn't get over time I had to settle for comp, which I already had 6 weeks of vacation I couldn't use. After a year or more money was flowing again but not in hiring more IT and definitely not into my pocket.

I started throwing apps in for other jobs internally with other departments and a few outside places which I felt were long shots but I made it know I was hunting in hopes they'd take notice and cough up some more money and some more help. Well one of the outside places called me in for an interview, I didn't get the first job but three months later they had another opening and straight told me they were very happy I decided to apply again.

The day I told them I had an offer from another place they countered by matching the offer...except they could not say for sure just how long it would take with the paper work and all. See Ya!

Number 2 would be the immediate reason I handed my notice in last week (huzzah!), but 3 and 5 are very much endemic in this place, and since another guy left a couple of months back there have been shades of 14 too. Before anyone asks I work (worked?) for a large UK college, and colleges seem able to soldier on for years under financial, personal and professional conditions that would sink a company in the private sector in a matter of months. Where else could you have a network management team who have three server failures in one week due to running five-year-old hardware while they have two-year-old servers that have never been out of their shipping crates, and take the entire network offline for four days to fix the problem, and still have their jobs and cushy salaries at the end of it?
