Weekend Topic: IT Certifications

Posted by: ReMeDy on: 05/18/2007 09:28 PM [ Print | 6 comment(s) ]

This topic is probably one that has been debated heavily in the last five years. However, it's always good to refresh the opinions from others who haven't participated. CompTia has overlapped the 2003 A+ exam to June 30th to support the school's extended semester. If you haven't taken it, you still have at least one month to do so. Do you have a certification? If not, what is your reasoning for not having it?

Getting certificated for something should be a confirmation of the skills, knowledge and talent that are/were already available to you. Getting certified should not interfere or boost your ego in such a way that it would affect your normal functioning in your job or personal life, its just a mere affirmation of something that you or your friends/colleagues knew you were capable of. But it wouldn't hurt to surprise them once in a while, that should keep then on their toes ;)

Get that certification. I got my A+ in Feb '94 when the test included PCs AND Macs. I have been urging some of my younger PC brethren to "straighten up and fly right" and go get certified in something.

I got mine about 2 years ago. I kinda just wanted to make sure I knew what I thought I knew.

I got the A+ about four years ago. Interesting to hear that it used to include Macs - it's now so Wintel-centric that AMD was barely a footnote in my revision guide!

Duallies Present Gigabyte GA-8I865G775-G (3.4GHz Pentium-D 950), PowerMac G5 (4x2.5GHz G5), PowerMac G4 (2x1.42GHz G4) Duallies Past Abit BP6 (2x366MHz Celeron @ 550MHz), Intel MS440GX (2x450MHz Pentium III Xeon), Tyan Thunder K7 (2xAthlonMP 1900+), PowerMac G4 (2x533MHz G4)

My only objection to certs is that they are all too often used
as a substitute for real ability. I remember one guy in my shop,
who was MCSE certified, and couldn't find his a*& with both hands
and a map. The thing that bothered me about all that was, not only was he
hired in the first place, but he got more money than me. That may sound
a little petty, but it's still a bitter pill to swallow when you can run
rings around someone like that.

Just my 2 cents... 8)

I have to get my A+ soon. I am still scared about the exams.
Thanks
