Posted by: ReMeDy on: 05/05/2007 12:54 AM [ Print | 10 comment(s) ]

Microsoft released Windows Vista business market back in November 2006 and for consumer desktops in January '07. It is now May 4th. The question begins as our forum member, Slash , has posted the topic. When will You move to Vista? Feel free to post your reply either on the front page or in our forums. :)

After purchasing all 100% supported hardware.
After all software makers of the software I currently use is updated to the point where they could be certified for Windows Vista.
After Service Pack 1 and beyond.

I tried it with my current configuration already... with flaky dice. Of course I had no supported network drivers, no supported RAID card drivers, and no supported sound card drivers. For starters.

Other than that, it seemed... bloated, annoying, and buggy.

Unique.

I don't plan on using Vista (at home). I may be forced to use it at work in the future though.

Probably around the same timeframe that I did with XP... right after SP2. (at the very earliest, SP1)

Right now, I haven't seen a single compelling reason for me to upgrade to Vista. It doesn't offer any features that I:

1) can't already get on XP or
2) have any desire to have.

WinFS was the most interesting thing about Vista for me, and since they ditched that, I completely lost interest.

Hopefully by then I'll have figured out how to turn off all of the stupid GUI crap, and get it looking\\\\\\\\ performing like 2k/XP as much as possible.

The pathetic state of our government will never change unless we stop electing politicians and start electing public servants. Remember: There was once a time when the term "politician" had a very negative connotation.

or
M$ stops all support for XP AND XP-64
or
I buy a new laptop that comes with it installed AND I don't want to bother with hunting down all of the XP drivers for it to reformat it to XP

The question is not when will I use Vista, but rather when will I consider it worth paying for... ;)

when crysis or UT2007 release; which i'm hoping will be after SP1. If that DX10 reverse-engineering project pans out i'm sticking with XP for a long while.

Never.
Linux, with Win2k as a legacy MS Windoz support, is good enuf. If it was not for certain proprietary programs that require MS Win* OS I would not even have it in the house.

Once I cleaned the coffee I spit-laughed onto my monitor, I decided to chime in here.

Vista? Only when I'm dragged, kicking and screaming something about Ubuntu and SUSE, will I allow that nonsense on my computers.

I client of mine bought a brand new, wonderful Dell laptop for his wife, and they (without asking me) opted for Vista. I don't recall the graphics card, but the 'full Vista Experience' was presented - Pixel Shader 3.0 and all.

After 1 week, at the risk of voiding their warranty (Dell gets picky about this), she asked me to transfer her XP to the laptop. Vista had overstayed it's welcome. Vista's pretty, but I can make glowing buttons in Windows 2000 using C++. For all the time and effort they put into Vista, my primary focus is on whether or not they'll continue to activate XP re-installs. Just think, MS could literally force us into moving to Vista, or backwards to Windows 2000, or sideways over to Linux, simply by refusing to continue activating.

I'm considering devoting time to open source Linux development just to help move the serviceability toward the consumer expectations, and drop MS OS altogether. I know, a noble idea which will see little fruit for years.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. If anyone other than Einstein had said that, I'd have never thought it was true.

Vista, whata load of monkey dung.

People are only supposed to upgrade to do what they NEED to do, not because of an OS. As it is an OS should be nearly transparent as far as system resources go. The OS should only be there to run whatever I need to run, not to eat up system resources and making everything else run slow, and/or require systems to be upgraded. I have to congratulate MS on making a piece of software that is so easy for Apple to make fun of.

At any rate, I have 500Mhz machines running XP that I maintain at work. I've cut everything out of the OS that I don't need for them to function and they run quite fast (which surprises most). My current desktop runs a GA-2CEWh motherboard, dual Opteron 285's and 3GB of RAM. Vista had two of my cores maxed pretty often while doing petty operations. So, likely Vista will never be run on that machine. I was able to "take a hatchet" to it and cut a lot of the fat out of it, but I'm not sure if it was enough for my liking.

I have a laptop coming with Vista one it. Vista requiring more system resources means lower battery life. If I can't cut Vista down to where I feel is acceptable, I'll try XP. It XP wont run well due to driver issues, I'll either make myself a Fedora live ISO or run Knoppix.

Unfortunately, I have to run some form of Windows for some of my hardware. Until programmers start releasing more drivers, programs, and games for Linux, Ms will continue to dominate.

Oh, wow, you modified your computer case for your system, isn't that cute. I modified my HOUSE for my system. lol

I need Windows for school so I might as well get used to Vista now since I'll be upgrading my memory to 8GB soon.

I'll just use XP-86 in a VM for those apps that refuse to run in the Vista 64bit environment.

I'll either go Business or Ultimate Retail for the dual socket support needed in a future workstation.

This is going to be later this year or early next.
