Windows Server 2003 = No Opteron 64bit Love

Posted by: Hooz on: 03/22/2003 05:01 AM [ Print | 12 comment(s) ]

Continuing with the Opteron/64bit theme, it looks like Microsoft's new server OS will support IA64, but will lack any x86-64 support at launch. As I said before, it shouldn't matter much since the Opteron chews through 32bit code like a beaver on crack, but it's interesting nonetheless.
At its April event in San Francisco, Microsoft will roll out specifically for Itanium two high-end versions of its Windows Server 2003 operating system, it first server OS update in three years. The 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 will run on all x86 processors including AMD's Opteron which has both 32- and 64-bit modes.

Screw the 4gb limit, and MS for that matter, go Linux.
Mandrake has released 9.0 for x86-64

And really I just want the hardware (really really bad).

I thought microshaft and AMD formed a good partnership with Windows XP/ AMD XP processors. Why is microshaft screwing AMD now with Windows 2003 server?

Makes you wonder how much these guys at silicon strategies really know... It's Blackcomb, not "Black Home"...

To paraphrase someone over at Silicon Investor 'Bill Gates probably wakes up with a horse head in his bed every morning' He goes on to suggest that 'Intel Inside' stands for 'Intimidation Inside' and that Microsoft will be galvanized (zinc plated) into action when they notice how many Opteron servers are running 64-bit Linux.

microshaft is definately shooting themselves in the foot with this decision. Once companies make the migration over to one of the linux distro's and have hired the support/development/deployment personell, they probably won't be switching back to windows anytime soon for their servers.

Probably nothing as the Athlon 64 isn't due til Sept :)

It might turn away some of the single and dual Opteron early adopters though...

If the rumors we've seen on the web about the OS kernel team really liking x86-64 are true, it's going to royally piss them off as well.

(You might recall that these are folks who were ready for MS to hire them away from DEC after DEC didn't make a product out of "Prism", a project into which they'd put many years of their lives)

I suspect this "we don't know what [Windows Server 2003 64-bit Opteron Edition] would look like" has very little to do with coding and much to do with marketing, packaging, and licensing. Should it be available in Standard Server, Web Server, and Enterprise Server flavors? Or is Opteron, like the Itanium, considered such a high-end machine that only higher-end packages should be offered? etc.
