Worms Jack Up the Total Cost of Windows

A couple of you sent in a link to an interesting article over at techweb.com. These days whenever a debate rages over what operating system should be used by businesses and corporations alike, someone always brings up total cost of ownership (TCO). Well, Gartner says the ever-increasing number of worms being created to exploit holes in Windows certainly affects its TCO.

Sure... Then you can just pay that 15% premium up front and forget about it... Why not go with linux? that makes more sense... Lower TCO, lower equipement/software costs upfront... Fine. I'll spell it like everyone else does.... |

Yeah sure, that makes a lot of sense. Do you honestly believe Linux is (inherently) more secure than Windows? If everyone switches to Linux, Linux will be targeted. Then they'll have to rapidly deploy patches for their Linux systems, bringing up their TCO. Same problem, different system. A little to a lot, depending on how its deployed, configuration is everything (ok maybe not everthing, but a lot) in security. Because of the open source development team, flaws are addressed much quicker, and by a more diverse team of independent thinkers... (Iam not saying that linux developers are smarter than windows developers, it just the windows guys get tied into 1 corperate culture, 1 way of doing things... Linux guys (I think) are more likely to come up with new ways to skin the cat, than windows guys are... IMO) Linux does have some security & stability advantages over windows. Namely the Registry. I think this is the largest flaw in the windows design. Granted it got rid of the config.sys, and autoexec.bat, and all the other boot-time scripts, but Ive had more machines fail because of a corrupt registry than any other single cause... Also I was pointing to the Mac premium... macs being more expensive than a comparable windows box and (sometimes) the price premium some mac software cares. |
